Candidate Inclusion Methodology

How we decide which candidates to list, and what each status means.

Verification before listing

A candidate record is added only after an editor verifies the candidate's identity, candidacy status, an official campaign source, the date verified, and either a candidate website or a filing record. We do not seed the database with unverified candidate assertions.

Neutral ordering

Candidates are listed alphabetically by default. Order is never based on donations, popularity, or editorial preference. Ballot order is used only once it becomes official for a given election.
